Short answer: FilmCraft's own README calls the editor alpha and about 56% ready for real work. In October 2026, users on X reported an export button that did nothing, a crash on export, and lag. PilotCut runs on macOS and ships a Windows Beta, free during beta, so the agent you already pay for can edit with 83 purpose-built tools.

Tip

Free during beta. Bring the agent you already pay for. PilotCut runs on macOS and ships a Windows Beta. It is the fastest editor for AI: 83 purpose-built tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice. Connect Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode or Antigravity.

What is FilmCraft?

FilmCraft is an open-source video editor written in Rust and part of the ArtCraft app suite. Its README describes "the same panels, workspaces, tools and shortcuts" as Premiere, and says agents can drive "more than 650 engine commands" through a CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and in the browser. Version 0.9.0 was released on October 18, 2026, per its download page.

The editor is free. Its in-app AI runs on your own API key or on Craft credits. The pricing page says "There is no subscription and credits do not expire" and "one message does not always equal one credit."

What rough edges are FilmCraft users reporting?

These are public posts on X from October 2026, quoted as written:

  • Export that will not start. @PatriotPlatenik (October 15, 2026): "Loaded a 40 second video, cropped a couple of seconds from start to end." "Export button doesn't work (active, clicking doesn't do anything)." After the queue started: "0% to 1% takes 2 minutes. Uninstalled thank you very much!"
  • A crash on export. @TurnUpTheVix (October 16, 2026): "Tried to edit a quick movie project with FilmCraft. Crashed on export."
  • Lag on effects and big files. @Vniverse77 (October 11, 2026) asked ArtCraft: "Why is Filmcraft so laggy when effects and playing large files?" @Tworedx (October 7, 2026): "web filmcraft is laggy."
  • Finzar's test, as posted by @biroldev. @biroldev (October 18, 2026) reported video editor Finzar's test. The post lists "Familiar UI, shortcuts, masking & nesting" and "Great mask keyframe handles", then "No preset imports or motion blur" and "Buggy dissolves, keyframes & heavy lag Fun for $0, not ready yet, he says."
  • A confusing interface. @dogwifblankeh (October 16, 2026) wrote that, next to PhotoCraft, FilmCraft "has confusing interface" and "shit fps even without playing the video."
  • Memory on a 4K project, then a fix. @telegram_man (October 6, 2026) said that on a 4K project it "ate nearly 39 GB of memory on my 24 GB Mac" and that "editing was basically impossible." He opened a GitHub issue. On October 11 he wrote: "Three days later, a fix landed. I tested it: it works." and "FilmCraft is already good enough for my workflow. There are still rough edges, and I've reported those too."

Most of these posts came before the 0.9.0 release, so test the current build on your own footage before a deadline depends on it.

What does FilmCraft's own README list as gaps?

The FilmCraft team publishes its own numbers. Its README status section, re-measured on October 10, 2026 against Premiere Pro 26.5.2, says:

  • "FilmCraft is in alpha." Feature breadth is "~86%" (menus 92% and effects 100% measured). "Ready for real work" is "~56%." That figure is "Our honest estimate of how close FilmCraft is to replacing Premiere on real projects."
  • Premiere projects: ".prproj files can't be opened yet."
  • Plugins: "No plugins." "No VST3 / Audio Units or OpenFX hosting."
  • Delivery: "H.264 is our only software delivery-codec export; H.265 exports only through a hardware encoder (NVIDIA on Windows: Main 8-bit SDR and Main 10 HDR PQ / HLG; VideoToolbox on macOS: 8-bit Main, SDR); no AV1 export yet."
  • The export section of the same README also says: "Also: Apple ProRes 422 HQ and Motion JPEG in QuickTime, MXF OP1a and Avid-style OP-Atom (DNxHR, ProRes or H.264 with PCM and start timecode), PNG sequences, animated GIF and WAV."
  • Speed: "Blend modes and the most common effects run on the GPU, but Lumetri, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU." The same bullet says "H.264 encoding can use the hardware encoder on macOS and on Windows and Linux with an NVIDIA GPU (opt-in, Export ▸ Hardware encoding)."
  • Real footage: "camera and phone files in the wild are less tested. Windows and Linux get far less testing than macOS."
  • AI: "Few so far; speech to text is optional and off by default."

Can FilmCraft's agent reach files outside your project?

Yes, by its own account. The FAQ on the FilmCraft MCP page says: "The MCP server has no folder-confinement option, so it can read and write wherever your user account can." Its advice is to "Run it in a project folder you are happy for it to work in, and review what it does."

Why edit with your own agent in PilotCut?

We make PilotCut as working creators, for the person doing the edit. Here is what you get:

  • One surface for you and your agent. 83 purpose-built editing tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice. Your agent uses the same tools the editor UI uses, over MCP and the CLI.
  • One prompt, many edits. A single prompt drives many tool calls on a local project.
  • Cuts you can see first. Silence, filler-word and dead-air cuts come back as a plan before they apply, with breath-safe snapping.
  • A record of every change. A filmstrip preview and a 250-entry edit history that you and your agent can both read. Markers carry their origin and confidence, and an agent never deletes a marker you placed.
  • Every shape you post. Canvas aspects include 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:4 and 21:9.
  • A clean handoff. Export the timeline as FCPXML when a project moves on to another editor.
  • No PilotCut meter. Free during beta. Your agent bills to the plan you already pay for. No PilotCut credit meter.
