Descript AI Credits vs PilotCut: Bring the Agent You Already Pay For

Tip

Free during beta. Bring the agent you already pay for. Creators are tired of stacking another product subscription in 2026. PilotCut is a local Mac editor — the fastest editor for AI — 83 purpose-built tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice, so your agent and you waste less time and money. Connect Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or Antigravity. There is no PilotCut credit meter for BYO agent edits.

Descript is a strong transcript-first editor. Many creators start there for talking-head cleanup. The friction that shows up in public posts is not "Descript cannot edit." It is the two-bucket meter: media minutes and AI credits.

Descript's own help article documents the new plan shape. Creator includes 1800 media minutes per month and 800 AI credits per month. AI credits draw for Underlord, Studio Sound, effects, text-to-speech, avatars, generative video, and more. Descript does not publish a per-action credit dollar price; check the help page and the live pricing page for current dollars.

What creators are saying on X

These are real posts. Treat them as user reports, not lab benchmarks.

@Rethaxman wrote: "I subscribed to the Descript Creator plan... I ran out of AI credits... I have 1800 minutes of voice balance remaining. It's still asking me to buy more credits to use those 1800 minutes."

That is the split pool in plain language. Media minutes left. AI credits gone. The edit that needed AI still blocked.

@tomaslau described starting in Descript, running out of AI credits mid-edit, then rebuilding the cut with ChatGPT Codex, HyperFrames, FFmpeg, Whisper, and ElevenLabs. The thread is a workflow story, not a pricing sheet. The pattern is familiar: the agent work moved to tools the creator already paid for.

@alexwendlingX alleged paying about $70 of AI credits and then being charged for three yearly memberships in three months. Treat that as one user's allegation, not proven fraud. Billing disputes belong with Descript support and the user's bank records.

@David___Mbugua posted a short video asking whether Descript is more expensive once you account for Media Minutes, AI Credits, and Underlord. The question matches the help article's two-pool model.

@armaanagrawal_ wrote that trials of Descript, Kapwing, Veed, CapCut, Gling, and Recut still left major manual work. That is not a Descript-only complaint. It is a reminder that "AI edit" products still need a reviewable timeline.

What Descript's help page actually says

From the legacy and sunset plan article:

Plan (as listed)Included
Free60 media minutes per month, 100 AI credits (one-time)
Education / Nonprofit Hobbyist600 media minutes per month, 400 AI credits per month
Creator1800 media minutes per month, 800 AI credits per month
Business2400 media minutes per month, 1500 AI credits per month

Media minutes draw when you upload or record. AI credits draw when you use AI-powered features. Creator and Business can buy top-ups. Unused media minutes do not roll over monthly.

That structure explains the X posts above without inventing a per-click price. If your weekly edit burns AI features faster than the monthly credit pool, you top up or stop.

What PilotCut does instead

PilotCut is a native macOS, local-first editor. Media and the .pcbundle project stay on your Mac. Edit, preview, and render stay local. Prompts, transcript text, and frames an agent is asked to inspect follow that agent's provider.

Free during beta. Bring the agent you already pay for.

The agent surface:

  • 83 purpose-built editing tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice. Same tool surface for the UI, the CLI (pilotcut tool list / describe / call), and MCP clients.
  • Named meaning-changing actions take confirm. For filler and silence work, edit-words actions cutSilences, removeWords, and removeDeadAir return a plan on confirm:false and apply on confirm:true. Breath-safe snap keeps dialogue intact when the plan is right.
  • The Core Agent chat panel gates on each tool's riskTier. The agent CLI and third-party MCP clients are not gated. A CLI agent can send both calls itself. The protocol is two steps, not a universal human checkpoint.
  • Agents: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Antigravity.
  • Final Cut handoff: export type=fcpxml writes FCPXML 1.11 with absolute media paths as an agent tool.

Why bring your own agent in 2026

Creators are tired of stacking another product subscription in 2026. PilotCut is free during beta: no PilotCut subscription, and no editor-side credit meter for BYO agent edits.

The AI path is to bring the agent you already pay for: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or Antigravity. Those are the frontier seats you already chose. Bundled editor AI works differently. Descript draws AI credits for its stack (help). CapCut-class consumer editors are not handing you your Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex seat inside the timeline either.

Using the agent you already buy on a local PilotCut timeline is how you get more done with money you already spend. Choosing that stack saves your time and your agent bill, instead of adding a third AI tax.

A practical path off the credit cliff

  1. Keep the agent you already pay for (Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex are common).
  2. Import or record into PilotCut so the timeline is local and inspectable.
  3. Ask the agent for a confirm:false plan on cutSilences / removeWords / removeDeadAir.
  4. Read the plan. Commit with confirm:true when the cuts are right. Use Core Agent chat if you want riskTier gating.
  5. Export full quality locally, or export type=fcpxml when another NLE must finish.

Why separate pools feel expensive mid-edit

The help article is clear that media minutes and AI credits are different drawers. Upload-heavy weeks burn minutes. Underlord-heavy and effects-heavy weeks burn credits. A creator can look "fully paid up" on minutes and still be blocked on the AI feature that made them subscribe.

That mismatch is what @Rethaxman described with Creator minutes left and AI credits empty. It is also why @tomaslau rebuilt outside Descript with ChatGPT Codex and local tools once credits ran out mid-edit.

Generative hosted stacks (avatars, Underlord-class automation, text-to-video) are a different job from weekly cleanup on footage you already shot. PilotCut does not market itself as text-to-video. For local timeline cleanup with a BYO agent and no PilotCut credit meter, try PilotCut — free during beta.

What "83 purpose-built tools" means in practice

When this post names tools, it means the shared editor surface:

  • Timeline cuts that take confirm on edit-timeline cut
  • Transcript cleanup via cutSilences, removeWords, removeDeadAir
  • Chapters via markers generateChapters
  • Captions and replace flows via the listed fx actions
  • Canvas and layout tools with dryRun:true where supported
  • Peek filmstrip for a visual check
  • export type=fcpxml when another suite must finish

Asset and track removals such as rm-track and rm-asset take no confirm field. Those actions apply when called — not every destructive edit proposes first.

PilotCut + Claude Code or ChatGPT CodexFree during beta on PilotCut + the agent plan you already buyAgent usage on the provider bill, not a PilotCut credit pack

Hosted generative composition and weekly cleanup on shot footage are different jobs. For the cleanup job — local timeline, BYO agent, no PilotCut credit meter — bring Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex to PilotCut.

Bottom line

Descript's public help docs make the meter explicit: media minutes and AI credits are separate pools. Creators on X are already reporting the pain of empty AI credits with minutes left.

PilotCut answers a different job. Free during beta. No PilotCut product subscription tax. Bring the frontier agents you already pay for: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or Antigravity. 83 purpose-built editing tools on one local surface. No editor-side credit meter for BYO agent edits. That stack saves time and money you already spend, instead of metering another bundled AI.
