Mirage Tesseract vs PilotCut: An Agent Engine or an Editor You Share with Your Agent

Mirage Tesseract, announced September 22, 2026, gives Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex a free local video engine through two skills and a CLI. PilotCut is a Mac editor where you and your agent drive the same 83 tools, free during beta.

You edit video with a coding agent, and on September 22, 2026 Mirage gave that agent a new option. Tesseract is a free local video engine that your agent drives through skills and a command-line tool. PilotCut is also free while the beta runs, and it also takes the agent you already pay for. The difference is where you sit: next to an engine your agent operates, or inside an editor you and your agent both work in.

Tip

Free during beta. Bring the agent you already pay for.

  • The full editor, free while the beta runs. There is no published price.
  • Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode or Antigravity runs the edit on your plan.
  • You and the agent work on one timeline, with the same 83 purpose-built editing tools.
  • Your footage stays on your Mac.

What Mirage Tesseract ships

  • An engine for agents, announced 2026-09-22. Mirage calls Tesseract a video creative suite built for AI agents, powered by the engine behind its Captions app (press release).
  • A CLI and two skills. You install the Edit Video and Motion Graphics skills into your agent, and the skills guide it through setting up the Tesseract CLI. A ChatGPT and Codex plugin is listed, and the Claude Code plugin is marked coming soon (README).
  • Editable project files. Each project is a .tsrct document your agent can revise and render again (README).
  • Motion design in the project model. Keyframes, adjustment layers, compositions, timing and sound are part of a Tesseract project (mirage.app).
  • Free local engine. Local preview and rendering are free, and your agent's own costs are separate (mirage.app).
  • Controls your agent builds. The page says: "Your agent made the video. Now ask it to make the editor." It suggests asking the agent to build controls for timing, typography, color or framing (mirage.app).
  • Editing, not generation. Tesseract edits existing media and creates motion graphics. Footage generation and avatars are separate tools (mirage.app).

Where Tesseract and PilotCut overlap

Both are free to use today. Both can run the edit on your own machine. Both bill the agent to the plan you already pay for. Both keep the project editable after the first render. Picking between them comes down to what you do with your own hands on the edit, and what you can check after the agent works.

What PilotCut gives you and your agent

  • An editor you use directly. PilotCut ships the timeline and the controls. Trim a clip by hand, then ask the agent to continue from there.
  • Read the plan before a cut lands. Ask for a cut, a silence pass or filler-word removal, and the first answer is the list of changes. Nothing moves until the agent applies it.
  • See what the agent did. Scroll back through 250 edit history entries. The agent reads the same history, so it can explain or build on its last pass.
  • Your markers stay yours. Leave a marker for the agent. It can resolve your marker and never deletes it. Each marker carries its origin and a confidence value.
  • Cuts that respect breath. Transcript cuts snap to breath-safe points, and the agent proposes each cut from evidence.
  • Motion titles and layouts. HyperFrames titles render through a bundled HeyGen runtime, scenes follow a layout language, and the canvas takes 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 21:9.
  • Hand off to Final Cut. The agent can write the timeline as FCPXML 1.11 with absolute media paths.

How it is built

  • One tool surface for the UI, the CLI and the agent. The buttons, the command line and the agent call the same 83 tools through the same mutation coordinator, so an agent edit is an ordinary edit you can undo.
  • Propose, then commit, on named actions. The timeline cut, the silence, word and dead-air cuts, generated chapters, caption import and patch, and voiceover and camera replacement return a plan on the first call and mutate nothing. A second call applies it. Removing a track applies at once, and so does accepting a B-roll slot.
  • The approval step is in the chat panel. The server never waits for a human. The Core Agent chat panel gates each tool on its risk tier. An agent on the CLI or a third-party MCP client is not gated and can send both calls.
  • A filmstrip check. The agent can pull a filmstrip of the timeline and look at the frames before it hands the edit back.
  • Local project bundle. One prompt drives many tool calls on a project bundle on your Mac.

Questions

What is Mirage Tesseract?

A video engine built for AI agents, announced by Mirage on 2026-09-22. Your agent installs two skills, sets up the Tesseract CLI, and edits an editable project file, with free local preview and rendering (mirage.app).

Can Claude Code use Tesseract?

Yes, through the skills installer. The Claude Code plugin is marked coming soon, and a ChatGPT and Codex plugin is listed (README).

If both are free and both take my agent, what does PilotCut add?

An editor you work in yourself, a plan before the cuts that change meaning, a 250-entry history you and the agent can read, markers the agent never deletes, and FCPXML export for Final Cut.

Can I edit by hand in PilotCut after the agent works?

Yes. The timeline you use and the agent's tools are the same surface, so a hand edit and an agent edit sit in one history and undo the same way.

Does PilotCut wait for my approval before the agent cuts?

The server never waits for a human. A cut returns its plan first and applies on a second call. In the Core Agent chat panel that second call is gated on the tool's risk tier. An agent on the CLI can send both calls itself.

What does PilotCut cost?

PilotCut is free during beta. There is no published price after the beta. Your agent bills to the plan you already pay for.
